How Does Paraffin Therapy Work?

Paraffin Wax has a very high heat capacity, this means it is able to absorb and retain heat. The melted Paraffin is applied to the treatment area which then stimulates the process of Heat Transfer, as the Paraffin solidifies, the heat given off, called fusion, helps soothe pain often felt in your joints and back. Furthermore, the heat from the Paraffin Wax opens pores and increases circulation in the skin, helping to create a smoother and more radiant appearance.

How is Paraffin Wax Therapy Performed?

Hands, Feet or Elbows

The treatment area will be cleansed and an intense hydration lotion will be applied to your skin, the area will then be lowered into the liquid paraffin bath. The excess paraffin will be removed and the coating will set. This process will occur several times to build up layers of set paraffin on your skin. The layers help to lock in warmth.  The area is then wrapped in polywrap and kept warm with a heated garment for 15-30 minutes. The wax is then removed by your therapist revealing intensely hydrated, clean and fresh skin.

Back, Facial and Other Body Areas

Your treatment will begin with a consultation before preparing the treatment area by removing clothing or makeup if necessary. The liquid paraffin is then applied onto the treatment area by a brush as the dipping method is impossible for certain areas. Disposable gauze is also used to help paraffin adhere to curves in the surface area. The paraffin will be layered and allowed to set for up to 30 minutes under polysheets and heated blankets. Once removed, the treatment area will be smooth, fresh and pain free.

How is Paraffin Wax Therapy Sanitary?

Despite multiple people using the same Paraffin Wax bath, paraffin Wax Therapy is very sanitary due to the fact it contains no water, no Oxygen and is maintained at 54 Degrees C, making it an inhabitable place for pathogens. Furthermore, from its first use in hospitals in 1962, no complaints of cross contamination or concerns have been given to the FDA. Finally the sanitation of Paraffin Wax Therapy is increased due to the nature of the treatment; at the point of contact between the treatment area and Paraffin, an instant barrier is formed due to the differing temperatures of the human skin and the wax, congealing any bacteria and preventing contamination of the paraffin bath. In a 2007 study by R-Tech Laboratories, the conclusion of Paraffin Wax Sanitation was that the instant barrier created was adequate enough however should the treatment not be performed fully and bacteria entered the bath, the Paraffin 'can not harvest bacteria'.

Despite this evidence, Body TLC discards unused Paraffin Wax to ensure maximum sanitation and confidence from you, our clients.
