5 Things You Should Consider Before Whitening Your Teeth
1. At-Home Whitening can be challenging
Local pharmacies and social media sites alike are drowning in at-home teeth whitening products. The issue is that the results are not always impressive. It’s all about the active ingredients, the method of application and the frequency, with many products simply falling short on all three accounts. Make sure to do your research and buy from a trusted brand with a long history of providing whitening products. Naturawhite is just that - a trusted market leader offering proven results
We are of course talking only about LEGAL TEETH WHITENING options. If you want to learn more about the dark, underworld of illegal teeth whitening products and gels, which come mostly from China – click here.

You can always discuss teeth whitening products with Naturawhite's head office before you proceed so you don’t end up with DIY whitener’s remorse!
Simply call Naturawhite direct if you wish to do this.

Body TLC stock the full range of aftercare products to use at home to either top up your results or if you've only a small amount of lift required this may be a suitable option instead of in clinic self administered service. Many people ask what the difference is between the in clinic and the at home usb kit... the difference is power - in clinic the laser lamp is a massively powerful 60W (typically 25w with other brands and salons), the at home kit is 5W for home safety.

2. Knowing the Differences Between Stains and Discolorations
It is important to keep one’s expectations in line when considering your teeth whitening options. Stains can get removed through teeth whitening appointments, such as those provided by our Naturawhite product in clinic and home kits.
Discolorations on the other hand, cannot. A good way to look at this is; stains are usually caused by exposure to smoking, red wine, coffee and tea. Discoloration is caused by tooth traumas, age, and certain dental conditions.
The law is tight in terms of what constitutes dental treatment therefore we are unable to advice you in if you have stains or discolouration, we instead suggest you ask your dentist which you have if you are concerned.
3. Don’t Fall For Social Media Teeth Whitening Myths
With most of the big whitening brands using celebrity influencers (who already had the hollywood smile), it’s easy to fall for the tricks that we have all seen across social media. Don’t fall for the hype and end up overspending on something that is too good to be true.
The truth is, there is simply no ‘trick’ to achieving a bright and white smile. This can only be achieved through the use of high-quality teeth whitening ingredients, proper application of the product and repeated treatments. Most importantly though one should practice a rigorous dental hygiene regimen, as well as avoiding foods and drinks that are known to stain such as; red wine, coffee, tea and finally cutting down on smoking.
4. Teeth Whitening Is Not For Everyone
If you have highly sensitive teeth, ongoing dental work, tooth decay or gum disease. It is not a good idea for you to seek cosmetic teeth whitening without prior agreement that it is safe to do so from your dentist. The reason being that either the products will cause discomfort, or that the efficiency of the products will decline. Additionally it is not recommended for expecting mothers to seek teeth whitening treatments. Unfortunately not all teeth whitening distributors will inform you of this, which gives cosmetic lightening a bad name.
5. Beware of DIY teeth whitening tips
As we mentioned earlier, social media crazes are rampant when it comes to teeth whitening. These ‘natural’ DIY tips can be at best harmless but ineffective, and at worst can be causing extreme long term damage to your teeth. Here are 3 'tips' found flooding the internet we caution you to speak to your dentist for their advice before using any of these 'tips':
Body TLC are not dentists are are not therefore allowed to give you advice on your dental issues. The following information is all readily available online and we stress the importance to speak with your own dentist for accurate tips.
-
Baking Soda Toothpaste: Toothpastes that contain the active ingredient bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) are easy to find. However this ‘tip’ advocates making your own at home. Whilst it is true that baking soda naturally whitens teeth the problem with this is that baking soda is an abrasive agent. Regular use, over time may have detrimental effects
-
Lemons/lemon juice: citrus fruits are highly acidic and the logic behind this ‘tip’ is that the acid will remove the stains from your teeth. The truth is that whilst acid can help remove stains, this method does not take into account the concentration and duration that one should apply this strong acid. therefore many have had negative effects from using this online 'tip'
-
Coconut oil/oil pulling: Lastly we have this mainly harmless ‘tip’. The method requires one rinsing their mouth with an oil (usually coconut oil). It is rumoured to “pull” stains out of the teeth, however this is not true and it is imagined the experience is not a particularly pleasant one.

Your teeth whitening appointment - What to expect?
You will be given a step-by-step guide at the beginning of your teeth whitening appointment and asked to follow the simple instructions.

-
A shade guide is used to let you check the shade of your teeth before and after the appointment.
-
You will gently cleanse and scrub your teeth. At this stage, any recent surface stains are removed and the enamel is given a gentle exfoliation
-
A textured accelerator wipe is coated with an activation spray and you will give your teeth a brush. As well as giving the teeth a deep cleanse, this will build up a lather and foam which helps draw the gel into the pores of your enamel.
-
A sterile mouth guard is then removed from a sealed foil packet and gel is applied. You then place the mouth guard into your mouth and put on a pair of protective goggles.
-
Sit back, relax and let the teeth whitening gel and laser light get to work! The laser light creates an oxidation reaction which will remove stains and tooth discolouration from the inside out.
A full teeth whitening appointment consists of 3 back to back 20-minute sessions and most customers see an 8 – 12 shade improvement.
If you have only mild staining you may not require 3 full sessions - therefore we offer a lower cost 2 cycle session for those who need less lift.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Teeth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface (enamel). It will lighten the existing shade of your teeth by multiple shades dependant on the stains vs discolouration on the teeth.

Who cannot have teeth whitening?
Anyone who is currently suffering from gum disease. It is essential that if you have any signs of gum disease you should be seen by your dentist before attending any teeth whitening appointments.
We also do not recommend that pregnant women do not have their teeth whitened. it is also not suitable for anyone under 18 years of age.

How long does an appointment take?
Appointments only take between forty five minutes to one hour, this is usually carried out over three twenty minute cycles in one session.

I want a natural looking smile is teeth whitening for me?
The finished shade of your teeth cannot be predicted, however throughout the appointment the shade change of your teeth can be monitored and once the desired shade has been achieved the process may be stopped. We find that the best and longest lasting results will always be with the full sixty minutes under the light.

I have Crowns/Caps/Fillings/Veneers, can I have teeth whitening appointment?
Yes you can! The teeth whitening procedure will restore crowns, caps, fillings or veneers to their original colour and will not cause any damage. Please note that the process will not whiten them more than their original colour.

How long with the results last?
For most people, we find that the results are long-lasting. It’s important to remember that exposure to heavily staining food and drinks such as coffee, red wine and curry as well as tobacco will darken teeth.
Your teeth should stay noticeably whiter for a considerable amount of time after having a laser teeth whitening appointment. We also offer an excellent aftercare range to help you keep your perfect white smile!

This is the question that concerns most people. The majority of people find the process completely painless, however, a small percentage of people experience temporary sensitivity to hot or cold for 24 – 48 hours following their appointment. We do stock a peroxide free alternative if this is your preference.
